Monitoring press freedom violations in Nicaragua
In compliance with our mission, we collect information related to violations against freedom of the press and access to public information.
The data are classified according to the indicator framework developed from a guideline of the categories used by the Red Voces del Sur (VdS), made up of 17 international organizations.
Voces del Sur (VdS) is a regional network of Latin American civil society organizations working to promote and defend press freedom, freedom of expression, access to information, and the safety and protection of journalists.
We used the agreed regional methodology with 13 collaboratively designed indicators to identify and record alerts on violations of fundamental rights related to the scope of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 16, which aims to achieve more equal, peaceful and inclusive societies.

Terminology
MURDERS
Act causing death, considered as an intentional homicide as a consequence of the exercise of the profession.
ABDUCTION
Sustracción y detención ilícita de una o detención de varias personas en contra de su voluntad (…) con el objeto de obstruir, censurar o incidir de manera negativa en la labor periodística.
FORCED DISAPPEARANCE
They are arrests, abductions, detentions, imprisonments, retentions or transfers or any other form of deprivation of liberty by governmental groups and refuse to disclose their whereabouts.
ARBITRARY DETENTION
Se refiere al arresto, retención, o detención de alguien, donde no existe un juicio justo o base legal que justifique su privación de libertad. Se da en consecuencia del ejercicio de la libertad de expresión.
TORTURE
Any act by which severe pain, intimidation, coercion, duress or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person.
AGGRESSIONS AND ATTACKS
Refers to violent, intimidating or limiting actions, which may be physical or verbal, implemented with the objective of impeding or limiting freedom of expression and press.
STIGMATIZING SPEECH
Refers to attacks, usually verbal, made publicly with the aim of discrediting and discrediting the victim.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Unwanted sexual acts, attempts, comments or insinuations, both in physical and digital spaces.
ABUSIVE USE OF STATE POWER
Actions planned, proposed and executed by the State that, abusing its power, are imposed against international standards of freedom of the press and expression.
INTERNET RESTRICTIONS
Se refiere a limitaciones impuestas en el acceso, publicación o difusión de información en la red.
GENDER ALERT (TRANSVERSAL)
Assesses whether the motive behind an attack or rape is related to the victim's sex, gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation.
